Joshawa Raymond Douglas Brooks, 28, of Fort Erie was reported missing in the water on Friday.

The discovery of his body stems from an incident in Fort Erie that left a woman dead and a child injured.

Niagara police spokesperson Phil Gavin said on Twitter that at around 6:30 p.m. Friday, police received a report of three people seen in distress in the river.

Police say a bystander observed the incident and rescued a 29-year-old woman and a young child from the water.

The woman was transported to hospital in critical condition, along with the child, who needed assessment.

On Saturday, the woman was pronounced dead in hospital while the child was in stable condition.

Police said there were reasonable grounds for Brooks’ arrest, related to attempted murder in relation to the child.

On Saturday afternoon, police said officers located a body in the water and later identified the remains as that of Brooks.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area of Jarvis St. and Niagara Boulevard at 6:30 p.m. to contact police at 905-688-4111.

Fort Erie is directly across the river from Buffalo, N.Y.
