SAYWARD, B.C. – A 54-year-old hiker from the United Kingdom is OK after spending a night lost in a remote area of Vancouver Island.
The RCMP say the man was reported missing Saturday afternoon, after he and his wife were separated in a forested area near Sayward, about 330 kilometres northwest of Victoria.
The report prompted a large-scale search that involved police officers and firefighters, an RCMP helicopter, police dogs and local search-and-rescue personnel.
The Mounties say the man was spotted Sunday morning, when a police helicopter spotted him near where he was last seen.
The sighting allowed ground crews to find the man, who police say had appropriate food and clothing and was discovered in good health.
The RCMP are crediting the volunteers from the Sayward area who joined in on the search.
