TORONTO – Friends and family of a Whitby man who lost his life last year gathered together recently to give him a fitting memorial.
Doug Vickery was an avid skateboarder and throughout his life spent a great deal of time at a local Whitby Skatepark.
Vickery died last May in a drowning accident in Muskoka.

Now, his family and friends rallied to give him a fitting tribute – a bench beside the skatepark in honour of Vickery.
“It’s kind of bittersweet,” Doug’s mom Claire Vickery said. “It shouldn’t be here but, he should be here but we’re happy… We’re very, very happy that it’s here.”
An official memorial was installed by the town of Whitby on Wednesday.
The bench features a plaque with Doug’s name and his favourite quote: “Live by your words and thoughts, your actions will come naturally.”
On Sunday, the town of Whitby will conduct an official dedication ceremony.
