Train drags pickup truck down bridge, killing two Manitoba seniors

A crash involving a train and a pickup truck has claimed the lives of two elderly Manitobans.

Emergency crews were called to the  scene of a “very serious collision” in Headingley on Monday.

The crash happened on Roblin Boulevard between Alboro Street and Hwy 334 around 4:20 p.m. Monday.

Police say a train heading north hit a vehicle and pushed it along the tracks onto a train bridge over the Assiniboine River.

RCMP confirmed the driver, a 75-year-old man and the passenger, a 65-year-old woman, both from the RM of Headingley, were pronounced dead on scene.

Roblin Boulevard was closed between Alboro Street and Highway 334 and the same highway is also shut down between Keough Avenue and Roblin.  Drivers were asked to avoid the area.

RCMP say roads have since been opened.

Stars Air Ambulance was called to crash but a spokesperson told Global News their crews were told to stand down.
