The 20-year-old man, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was seen walking around the store pushing a cart and taking cellphone video, the Springfield News-Leader and KY3 reported, citing law enforcement.

“He walked in here heavily armed with body armour on and military fatigues and caused a great amount of panic inside the store,” Springfield Police Department Lt. Mike Lucas told reporters.

An armed firefighter held the man outside the store until police arrived to arrest him.

“At this time, the investigation is ongoing and we are working to determine his motives,” the police force said in a statement.

The man had loaded weapons in his possession, reports said.

“His intent was not to cause peace or comfort to anybody that was in the business here,” Lucas said.

“In fact, he’s lucky he’s alive still, to be honest.”

The incident comes less than a week after a gunman attacked shoppers at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas.

Twenty-two people were killed. On Sunday, nine were killed in a shooting in Dayton, Ohio.
