Bits and Pieces (Feb. 22)

I'd like to start off by offering my deepest condolences to Joannie Rochette.

Rochette's mother, Therese, passed away suddenly upon arrival in Vancouver on Saturday Night. She was just 55 years old.

Joannie Rochette is the Canadian Figure Skating Champion and despite the tragedy, she does intend to compete in Tuesday's Short Program.

I don't want to jinx anything but it appears Canada is ice dancing its way to a Gold Medal. What an unbelievable performance on Sunday Night by Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. They were flawless, they had some impressive moves and left many speechless. A personal best, a first place performance and with only the Free Dance left (Tonight at 6:15pm) they could very well be Canada's newest Gold Medallists.

The Saskatchewan Huskies forward scored her 28th goal of the year on Sunday Night – tying the Canada West Single-Season record. It came down to the wire too as she scored the goal in the Huskies' final game of the regular season.

Breanne George and the Saskatchewan Huskies will visit the Manitoba Bisons next weekend in the Canada West Semi Finals.

With 11-games left in the regular season, the Saskatoon Blades sit in a three way tie for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Saskatoon Blades – 88 Points (11 GR)
Calgary Hitmen – 88 Points (10 GR)
Brandon Wheat Kings – 88 Points (9 GR)

So while tight, the Blades do hold a slight edge over both the Hitmen and Wheat Kings. The Bridge City Bunch will have a busy week ahead of them…

Tuesday: Chilliwack Bruins @ Saskatoon Blades (Bruins have won just four of their last ten games)

Wednesday: Saskatoon Blades @ Moose Jaw Warriors (Warriors in desperation mode as they fight for a playoff spot)

Friday: Prince Albert Raiders @ Saskatoon Blades (Raiders in desperation mode as they fight for a playoff spot)

Saturday: Regina Pats @ Saskatoon Blades (Pats may or may not be eliminated from playoffs by this point)

The way I look at it, the Blades should be able to get all eight points this week but I'll go on record and say they'll collect six. I figure they'll have their hands full at the Crushed Can.
