A woman in her 50s is being treated in hospital for “critical” burns and smoke inhalation after a house fire in Britannia on Thursday morning, paramedics say.
The blaze has displaced another woman and four children who live in one of the two units in the home on Farrow Street, west of downtown Ottawa, a spokesperson for the fire department said.
Firefighters were called to the two-storey house at 9:55 a.m. and arrived to “heavy smoke and flames.”
Paramedics were en route a minute later and took the injured woman to the trauma centre at The Ottawa Hospital in critical condition, according to a spokesperson for the Ottawa Paramedic Service.
“It’s too early to say whether the injuries are life-threatening or not, but they are quite significant,” Marc-Antoine Deschamps said.
No other injuries were reported, according to paramedics. The woman taken to hospital lives in the other unit in the home, the fire department later confirmed.
A crew of 36 firefighters helped to extinguish the blaze by about 10:30 a.m., Ottawa Fire Services said.
No details on where the fire broke out in the house or what caused it were immediately available, but Ottawa fire later confirmed the flames caused at least $100,000 in damages.
An investigator was called to the scene, according to Ottawa fire.
