An arrest has been made in connection with the homicide of a 51-year-old woman from late March.
Global News has learned her 17-year-old son is now facing a first-degree murder charge.
Neighbours said he lived with the victim in a house near the Royal Canadian Mint.
Const. Rob Carver said police are prohibited from identifying the accused under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, but that a first-degree murder charge is quite serious.
“The requirements for a charge of first-degree murder are fairly significant and detailed in the criminal code,” Carver said at a police press conference Wednesday.
“There would have to be a level of premeditation that would have to support that charge.”
The incident was Winnipeg’s 11th homicide of 2019. The city is currently sitting at 25.
