Scientists are describing what they say is a freak event this month in Greenland. They say nearly every part of the massive ice sheet that blankets the island suddenly started melting — even in Greenland’s coldest place.

NASA says its satellites saw melting in 97 per cent of the ice sheet, up from 40 per cent. Scientists can’t say yet if the melting is a result of global warming.
