High water levels on the Fraser River

People living along the Fraser River are keeping a close eye on water levels.

A high stream advisory is in effect from Quesnel to the Fraser Canyon, through Hope and into the Lower Mainland.

Last week’s record temperatures triggered a rapid snowmelt.

The rapid snowmelt, combined with the heavy rainfall on the South Coast, has caused a sharp rise in the river’s tributaries.

Water levels peaked near flood stage Tuesday in the Prince George area and flows along the Lower Fraser are expected to keep rising throughout the week.

Some relief for residents of flood prone areas in the Okanagan where lower temperatures have helped reduce the flood threat.

Although many streams and creeks across the region are still flowing high, the water level has actually dropped in the last 24 hours.

The river forecast centre has ended its high stream flow advisories for Mission Creek, the Similkameen River, and the west Kettle and Kettle Rivers.

The cooler weather and falling water levels are expected to last over the next few days.
