Adrian Dix: “elections belong to the voters and the voters decided” [FULL SPEECH]

A deflated and emotional Adrian Dix took to the NDP stage to address his campaign supporters after his party’s stunning loss to the Liberals.

Greeted by NDP chants, Dix paused briefly before opening with some light humour regarding B.C. politics never being dull.

“Elections belong to the voters and the voters decided,” Dix said and yet, regardless of the outcome he’s “very proud of the campaign the NDP candidates and volunteers ran across B.C.”

Dix did not address the party loss due to any particular reason and instead kept on point regarding the NDP party’s focus in the future – child poverty, inequality and environment. Those issues, he said, will continue to guide the NDP in the future.

“We’ve elected a strong government that will hold the Liberals accountable in the future,” Dix emphasized. “We’ve brought change as a government because we fight for a better society and we’re going to continue to do that.”

Dix was clearly disappointed “over participation in our democracy” – suggesting poor voting turnout contributed to the NDP loss. But overall was proud of the type of campaign the NDP ran; which he says was hard-fought and positive.

The NDP leader wrapped his short concession speech by thanking his family, volunteers and constituents who helped give him “a nice victory” in his riding of Vancouver-Kingsway tonight.
