VERNON, BC – Emergency crews were called out Friday morning when a locally owned flying car crashed near an elementary school.
The airborne car was flying over Ellison Elementary School after taking off from the Vernon airport when the parachute it uses to stay afloat collapsed, according to witnesses.

Around 8:45 a.m., the vehicle hit the school fence and landed in a nearby creek. The operator and a passenger were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to RCMP.
The car has been attempting flights to make certification.
Called the Maverick, the car is an experimental aircraft.
RCMP say there were no children on the school grounds at the time of the crash. The Transportation Safety Board will be attending to investigate.
