Evanston fire guts house, forces woman from home

CALGARY – A woman in her 20’s was able to safely escape a large fire in the community of Evanston, early Friday morning.

The fire broke out at a two-storey home in the 300 block of Evanspark Gardens N.W. around 3:30 a.m.

A woman in her 20’s, the lone occupant of the home, was able to get out safely with her cat.

Fire crews forced neighbours living on each side of the house to vacate as a precaution, but they were allowed back in their homes once the fire was extinguished.

The house where the fire originated was gutted.

Neighbouring homes did suffer slight damage in the form of melted siding, but crews were successful in stopping the fire from spreading to them.

Houses along the block were built under the new fire code, which means builders used fire-resistive sheet rock on the exterior of the homes, underneath the siding between buildings. Officials are crediting this new fire coating with helping fire crews keep the blaze contained to the home it started at.

It was the first major fire that crews working at the brand new Symons Valley Fire station have responded to. The fire station opened on Wednesday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
