OSHAWA – Police say a former elementary school teacher has been charged in the alleged sexual assault of a student in Oshawa more than two decades ago.
Durham Regional Police say the alleged assault took place between 1996 and 1997 at Dr. CF. Cannon Public School. Cst. George Tudos says the complainant who came forward was in Grade 5 at the time of the alleged assault.
“That student came forward to investigators and disclosed some information,” says Tudos. “Based on that information that was given, police charged a 74-year-old man.”
The alleged incidents took place just two years before he retired from that school according to the Durham District School Board. They also acknowledged the charges Friday. In a statement, Kimberly Brathwaite says he continued working for them afterwards as well.
“Upon retirement in 1999, the accused was also a supply teacher until 2012 at various schools throughout the board.”
Durham Regional Police say there may also be other alleged victims in the incidents. Now they are asking for them to come forward.
“We want to ensure that there are no other victims,” says Tudos. “We are urging anyone that has any new information or any information based on this case to contact the major crimes sexual assault unit.”
Police arrested 74-year-old Douglas Brooks of Bowmanville on Friday.
He has been charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching.
