A dead man was found in Barrie on Monday in a heavily wooded area next to the ramp to Highway 400 south, from the south side of Bayfield Street, police say.

The 40-year-old victim was identified and next of kin have been notified, officers added.

The man’s body was found by two individuals who were walking along the trail in the area, according to Peter Leon, the Barrie Police Service’s corporate communications co-ordinator.

“It’s a location where there are some people who do reside there,” Leon told Global News. “There are some tents in that area, and this individual appears to have made this area his home, and that’s where he passed away.”

At this point, there is no evidence to confirm whether foul play was involved, Leon said, and police are dealing with it as an isolated incident.

The body was removed from the scene late Monday afternoon and transported to the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service in Toronto, where a post-mortem is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

“Our investigation has identified the fact that the deceased had probably been there for a few days,” Leon said, adding that the post-mortem investigation will be able to identify that more conclusively.

There was a police presence on the scene Monday from about 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Leon said.

The investigation is ongoing.
