Harvey Milk’s nephew to appear in Toronto

TORONTO — Global human rights activist Stuart Milk, nephew of civil rights icon Harvey Milk, is set to attend the 3rd annual Inspire Awards in Toronto next month.

Organizers are expected to announce that Milk, co-founder of the Harvey Milk Foundation, will be an honoured guest at the June 1 event at the University of Toronto’s Hart House.

Hosted by radio personality Richard Ryder and featuring a performance by Suzie McNeil, the Inspire Awards will pay tribute to the “most inspiring” people, businesses and organizations in the city’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.

Milk, 52, is a sought-after speaker on LGBT rights who has appeared before the governments of the U.K., Italy, Panama and Turkey. He has been recognized for his activism with several awards.

In 2009, Milk accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama on behalf of his uncle, a San Francisco politician who was assassinated in 1978. Harvey Milk was portrayed by Sean Penn in the acclaimed 2008 film Milk.
