Hamilton police have arrested a suspect in the city’s fifth homicide of 2019.
Investigators say 20-year-old Dylon Moniz Duarte of Hamilton was picked up by officers in the city’s east end on Saturday afternoon.
Duarte was arrested by patrol officers attempting to enter a cab around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday in the Grandville Avenue and Delewana Drive area.
Assistance from witnesses aided in his arrest, according to investigators.
Police say the investigation remains open and detectives are currently obtaining surveillance video footage from the crime scene.
Early Friday morning, 23-year-old Tyquan Brown died of stab wounds after stumbling into an alleyway around 12:30 a.m. near Barton Street and Sherman Avenue.
Det. Sgt. Peter Thom says Brown was among a group of people who’d been watching the Raptors game in a nearby home.

Thom says the victim was stabbed after a vehicle pulled up as they were gathered outside of the residence.
“Our suspect got out of the vehicle and approached the group. He knew one of the females in the group, was not happy that apparently that she was socializing with this particular crowd,” Thom told Global News. “He produced a knife and stabbed one of the males.”
Officers on scene began CPR before paramedics arrived and rushed Brown to Hamilton General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Thom adds that Brown was not known to police.

“The vehicle that they took off in was involved in the short pursuit shortly afterward, and that vehicle was recovered in the central area,” Thom said.
He went on to say the driver of the red VW Jetta sedan was not involved in the altercation but was arrested on an unrelated matter.
The murder weapon has still not been recovered.

The family of the victim has reached out to the community via a Go Fund Me page in the hopes for raising $10,000 for Tyquon Brown’s funeral.
The page started by Brown’s sister, Tessa Ambrose, describes the victim as “full of light, drive, and loyalty. He was greatly intelligent, thoughtful and hilariously comical.”
In a fundraising post, Ambrose revealed that Brown was a graduate of Mohawk College with a career in construction.
