Applebaum says he’s game for playoff wager with Ottawa mayor

MONTREAL – Montreal’s interim mayor Michael Applebaum rose to the challenge after Ottawa’s mayor laid down the gauntlet Monday.

To add some flavour to the Habs-Sens hockey playoff series, mayor Jim Watson proposed a friendly wager.

During the series, each mayor would wear the shirt of the winning team and fly the winning team’s flag at city hall. He also asked Applebaum to put his money where his mouth is by challenging Montreal to a foodie showdown.

“Our Sens have had a season of ups and downs, but we know that their best games are still ahead of them,” said Mayor Watson in a statement.

“They have shown that they never give up – and our fans will not give up – as we cheer them to victory over the Habs.”

On Tuesday, Applebaum vowed to fly the flag of the playoff winner at City Hall for a week and promised to wear a Senator’s jersey if Montreal should lose.

“Absolutely, I am taking this friendly bet with the mayor of Ottawa,” the mayor told Global News.

“After an amazing regular season, I am convinced Michel Therrien’s team will give us the opportunity to see my colleague wearing a Montreal Canadiens jersey. Go Habs Go! ”

The playoff series wager began when Ottawa’s mayor started crowd-sourcing a few ideas for a bet via Twitter.

In the end, the egg rolls won, and Watson proposed a showdown between Ottawa’s Golden Palace egg rolls and Montreal’s world-famous smoked meat.

Although a few people wondered what egg rolls had to do with Ottawa, Watson had no qualms, tweeting: “Golden palace egg rolls are a classic Ottawa tradition going back decades! And they sell them at SBP [Scotia Bank Centre].”

The Montreal-Ottawa series is the first Canadian NHL team playoff since 2004.

The puck will be dropped at the first game Thursday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal.
