One man is in hospital after fire crews rescued him from the basement of a townhouse where fire broke out early Thursday night.
Firefighters were called to a housing co-op at 7355 Blake Street at about 7:15 p.m.
Upon arrival, fire crews saw smoke pouring from the basement of a townhome unit, and located an unresponsive man in the unit’s lower level.
Crews had a tricky time getting to the man, as the stairs leading to the basement had been extensively damaged by fire, and the unit was filled with smoke.
Once the man was successfully extricated from the unit, he was given first aid by first responders and rushed to hospital with undetermined injuries.
The fire was quickly brought under control before spreading to the rest of the home. Fire damage was limited to the one unit.
A dog in the home was found deceased upstairs.
The fire’s cause is under investigation.
