The remains were found on Tuesday afternoon by people riding quads in the Brule Sand Dunes, a remote area about 20 kilometres west of Hinton and 310 kilometres west of Edmonton.

RCMP say the remains were found on the east side of the Athabasca River, in an area accessible only by air or quad.

McKinley said the remains were transported to the Medical Examiner’s office in Edmonton on Friday afternoon. She said investigators are now “awaiting word” from the Medical Examiner. RCMP are no longer at the scene where the remains were discovered, and it has reopened to the public.
