Two students injured in school bus rollover north of Port Hope; driver charged

Two students suffered minor injuries after a school bus crashed north of Port Hope on Friday morning – Apr 12, 2019

Two students and the driver were taken to hospital following a school bus rollover north of Port Hope on Friday morning.

Northumberland OPP say around 8:20 a.m., a northbound bus carrying a female driver and 8 elementary school students veered off of Cold Springs Camp Road north of Ganaraska Road (County Road 9), about 28 kilometres north of the Town of Port Hope. The area borders Northumberland County and Durham.

Police say the bus was en route to Orono Public School, about 20 kilometres southwest of the crash. The vehicle landed on its side in the west side ditch.

Northumberland OPP say two students – ages 9 and 11 – suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital . Police said the bus driver was not injured but was also taken to hospital for precautionary measures.

Port Hope Fire, Northumberland County Paramedics and Durham Paramedics and Northumberland OPP assisted students and the driver.

Some parents arrived to the scene to pick up children and others were transported to school when another bus arrived to pick them up.

The cause of the single-vehicle crash remains under investigation.

Late Friday, OPP said all three have since been released from hospital.

Additionally, the 48-year old driver from Courtice, Ont., was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with careless driving, failure to properly wear a seatbelt and failure to ensure vehicle inspection report is accurately completed.

Her name was not released.
