Winnipeg woman dies with aid of doctor in Zurich; wished it could have been in Canada

WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg woman who went to Switzerland to end her life has died with the aid of a physician.

A family friend says Susan Griffiths, 72, died peacefully this morning at the Dignitas clinic in Zurich.

She suffered from multiple system atrophy, a degenerative disorder.

The Winnipeg woman said in one of her final messages that she wasn’t afraid, but wished she could have died in Canada.

Griffiths chose to travel to a European clinic for a doctor-assisted suicide before the disorder could overwhelm her body completely.

She said in an email to The Canadian Press that she spent four wonderful days with her family in Zurich – quote – “sharing memories, giggles and tears” as she prepared for her appointment today.
