With her weekly pick of fun things to do on the weekend, here is the rundown from Global News Morning’s Kahla Shea.
From flicks to flowers to childhood favourites – this weekend has it all.
1. Beloved bugs and other friends
Some very familiar faces are coming to the Manitoba Theatre for Young People stage from March 15 to 24.
The ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favourites‘ combines three childhood favourites in an absolutely beautiful show, using black light and puppets.

You’ll recognize our hungry caterpillar friend, along with ‘Little Cloud’ and ‘The Mixed-Up Chameleon’.
The pictures and video look like pure magic and performer Andrew Young said it’s a show all ages will fall in love with.
“They’re all done through very gentle storytelling and it’s just a really kind of beautiful visual show,” Young said.
Shows run over the next couple of weekends at 1 and 4 p.m., with a special French performance as well on Sat. March 23 at 4 p.m.

2. Movies with a message
Winnipeggers love film festivals and with the super long winter season we have, who can blame us for huddling inside and enjoying a flick or two?
Well the film festival running this weekend has nearly 20 different works for you to take in.
This is the 2nd annual African Movie Festival and organizers say the event aims to do so much more than just entertain the audience.
Festival organizer Ben Akoh said it’s a chance to highlight the strengths of the African community and create a platform to discuss social issues of newcomers to Canada.
“How can we find ways of harnessing the good qualities of people that show up in Canada in order to live in this cultural mosaic we now call home,” Akoh said.
This year’s event also includes a discussion forum called Gender in African Films which explores gender at different angles such as age and sexuality.

The festival also allows the African community to tell their own stories in their own way, including 21-year old Tope Babalola, who will be premiering his third full feature this weekend.

3. Signs of spring
There are several signs that spring is near: slightly warmer temperatures, Daylight Saving Time, and perhaps the best indication — the sight of cheerful yellow daffodils.
Year after year, the Canadian Cancer Society raises funds for care and research by selling beautiful bunches of this pretty little flower.

The annual Daffodil Campaign starts this weekend and runs until March 24.
The story behind the flower is incredibly powerful. The Society chose daffodils because of their resiliency. The blooms can survive our Canadian winters and are the first flower to appear each spring, which is known as a time of new beginnings and hope.

And not just here in Winnipeg — you can also pick up your bunches in over 100 other communities, including Brandon.
But if you are in Winnipeg, you can head to Walmart, Superstore, Outlet Collection Winnipeg or IKEA this weekend and any of the major malls next weekend to donate and pick up your bouquets.
