A woman who was swept up in Monday’s avalanche near Field, B.C., died of her injuries on Tuesday, according to Parks Canada.
A guided group was waterfall ice climbing on a Mt. Stephen route known as Massey’s in Yoho National Park, east of Field, when the avalanche hit on Monday at 2 p.m., Parks Canada said Tuesday.
A woman, believed to be 30, was airlifted to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary in critical, life-threatening condition, STARS said Monday.
In addition to STARS, Parks Canada said it was also assisted by Alpine Helicopters, Banff EMS, Field Fire and Safety, Lake Louise Fire and Safety, Golden RCMP, and Golden Victim Services.
Monday’s avalanche danger rating was moderate in the alpine, low at the treeline and low below the treeline, Parks Canada said.
Dangerous conditions were apparent on Tuesday, with the rating deemed considerate in the alpine, moderate at the treeline and low below the treeline, according to the agency.
“A few recent slides have run further than expected and we are entering a period of change after a period of relative stability,” Parks Canada said Tuesday. “With moderate precipitation in the forecast, new snow and strong winds will result in a rising avalanche hazard.”
Officials advise outdoor enthusiasts to consult the avalanche forecast before heading out.
