When the BC Liberals were in power, they promised to widen Highway 1 to six lanes between 216th Street in Langley and 264th Street in Aldergrove.
But when the NDP was elected, the new government said the project was being reviewed.
That was 20 months ago, and Transportation Minister Claire Trevena was recently asked if the highway widening is going ahead or being scrapped.
“We are still working on the improvements,” Trevena said. “We’re looking at what can be done as we move forward and know it’s an issue of congestion.”
Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun has long been calling for the widening, saying the region as a whole is suffering because of congestion. Businesses and everyday commuters are at their limit, he says.
He says when he’s had to travel into Vancouver, it can often take two hours.
