Dinosaurs Unearthed is an immersive and life-sized interactive experience that is supposed to give visitors a taste of what life was like millions of years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

The exhibit, which opened this week, allows visitors to control the movement of realistic animatronic dinosaurs. This weekend saw lines of eager children and visitors from across the province.

“We came all the way from Truro because we were pretty excited to see all these dinosaurs because they seemed pretty cool because of how they move,” said Dakota Smith.

The 16 dinosaurs in the exhibit are all from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods and have the goal of teaching people about the creatures’ appearance and behaviour.

If the dinosaurs are too exciting — or scary — there is also a dig table where visitors can be paleontologists for the day, unearthing fossil replicas.

Jeff Gray, curator of visitor experience and exhibits, says Dinosaurs Unleashed is based out of Vancouver and has been travelling across North America.

“We have hosted a dinosaur exhibit before, in 2015. That exhibit was approximately 2,000 square feet and had five dinosaurs. This one is more than double the size and triple the number of dinosaurs,” said Gray.

With animatronic dinosaurs as well as fossilized portions of actual creatures, visitors are able to get a real feel for the scaly and furry dinosaurs.
