Man charged 6 months after double fatal driveway crash near Tillsonburg

A 23-year-old man from Norfolk County is being charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death six months after a double fatal crash outside a home near Tillsonburg.

Norfolk County OPP say Maria Klassen, a 25-year-old from Norfolk County, was pronounced dead at the scene after a crash on McDowell Road West in North Walsingham on July 25. Her passenger, 26-year-old Abram Klassen, also from Norfolk County, was airlifted to a Hamilton-area hospital where he later died.

Police say a white SUV was travelling east on McDowell Road West and was trying to turn into the driveway of a home. A white pickup truck that was also heading eastbound tried to overtake vehicles heading in the same direction, police say. The white pick up struck the SUV, sending both vehicles into the north ditch, police say.

At the time, police said that speed was a contributing factor in the crash, and that the driver of the pickup truck was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

John P. Driedger has been charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, and is expected to appear in a Simcoe courtroom.
