Goehring was elected as MLA for the riding in 2015, defeating PC candidate Thomas Lukaszuk who had served the riding since 2001. Goehring has also served as the Liason to the Canadian Armed Forces for the NDP government.
Edmonton-Castle Downs was created in 1996 when Edmonton-Roper merged with the north half of Edmonton-Mayfield. Lukaszuk held the seat for the riding from 2001 to 2015.
The boundary went through changes again in 2010 when redistribution saw all land wet of 127 Street ceded to Edmonton-Calder and the eastern boundary that existed at 97 Street between the city limits and 167 Avenue moved east to 82 Street in land that was part of Edmonton-Decore.
