Police said officers were called to the 32000-block of South Fraser Way with reports of shots fired around 6:45 p.m.

Investigators arrived to find a dead male victim.

A neighbour, who asked not to be identified for fear of reprisal, said he and his wife heard multiple gunshots coming from the strip mall.

“Originally we thought it was, like, fireworks or firecrackers because it’s so close to Halloween,” he said.

“I run out my front door and I poke my head over a hedge and I look out, and it was like the tail end of a vehicle, but it went out so quick I couldn’t tell what the vehicle was, went peeling out of the driveway.”

The neighbour said the victim was lying at an entrance to a CIBC bank branch, which was empty of staff at the time and had one of its windows smashed out.

He said he saw a man and the woman trying to speak with the victim, who was still alive at the time, until first responders arrived.

“They were trying to resuscitate the gentleman, and then I just watched the guy pass away in front of me.”

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has now taken control of the case.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-4448 or Crime Stoppers, if they wish to remain anonymous.
