A Regina Rams football player is facing assault charges following an altercation at the University of Regina campus Oct. 6.
Defensive back Takudzwa Timothy Brandon Gandire, 21, of Vancouver is charged with assault causing bodily harm and failing to comply with undertaking.
Police received a call about 1:00 a.m. early that morning of a sick or injured man outside a business on U of R property. Reports say a group of men engaged in an altercation that turned physical.
EMS attended the scene and treated some individuals who had minor injuries.

In a statement the University of Regina said “The University of Regina is aware that a student-athlete with the Rams football team has been charged in relation to an incident that occurred at the Owl Bar and Restaurant the weekend of Oct. 5. As per the student-athlete code of conduct, the student has been suspended from all team activities while the matter is before the courts.”
The University declined an interview, and said they could not comment further on the matter.
Police learned on Oct. 9 that one man involved in the fight had been taken to hospital.
“On October 9, we had a university liaison officer who was in a meeting with campus security, learned about the event but also at that point learned someone may have been taken to hospital as a result,” Elizabeth Popowich, media relations for the Regina Police Service said.
That same morning, police received a report from a family member of one of the men in the altercation who was injured.
An investigation led to the arrest of Gandire; police say no charges for other individuals in the video are pending.
Gandire will appear in provincial court on Nov. 29, meaning he’ll miss the remainder of the Rams season, including playoffs as a result of the school-imposed suspension.
The Regina Rams did not respond to multiple requests for an interview.
