A 13-year-old boy has died after he was struck by a commuter train in the Saint-Laurent borough on Wednesday afternoon.
Montreal police spokesperson Andrée-Anne Picard said they received several calls around 4 p.m. about a collision at the Bois-Franc train station on Marcel-Laurin Boulevard.
Police say they believe the teenager was using a pedestrian walkway when he was hit by the train heading east toward Montreal.
The teenager was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his upper and lower body. Police confirmed his death at 9 p.m., saying he died earlier that evening in hospital.
“He unfortunately died from his injuries,” said Picard.
The train conductor, a 53-year-old man, was also evaluated at the scene, but not taken to hospital.
Investigators were on site to meet with witnesses.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision, but police say they believe it was an accident.
Train service back on
The emergency also forced rush-hour cancellations on the Deux-Montagnes train line, which runs between downtown Montreal and the North Shore.
As of 9 p.m., police say service has resumed on the train line.
Exo, the recently renamed transit authority that serves greater Montreal’s northern and southern rings, had asked commuters to opt for other modes of transit if possible.
Buses were also available to bring passengers to other stations.
