The deadline for Xinyi Glass to file an appeal on a council decision rejecting their facility in Guelph-Eramosa Township has come and gone with no word from the company.

A brief statement was posted to the township’s website on Wednesday afternoon notifying the community that the clerk did not hear from the company before the deadline.

A spokesperson for Xinyi did not go into any details about the company’s future plans during a phone call on Thursday but confirmed that Xinyi has decided not to appeal the July decision.

The $450-million glass plant, which would have covered two million square feet, was planned for the intersection of Highway 124 and County Road 32.

The biggest concern for residents was the 1.6 million litres of water Xinyi planned on using per day. Air quality, traffic and an on-site dormitory also raised concerns.

The facility would have created 400 jobs and may have added millions of dollars to the township’s tax base.

Council rejected Xinyi’s application since it does not meet the zoning bylaw definition of “dry use.”

Susan McSherry of the group GET Concerned said there is a sense of relief now that Xinyi has decided not to appeal.

“It was a very quiet ending to a very intense period of time,” she said, but added that the water conservation fight is just getting started.

“Guelph and Guelph-Eramosa Township have got serious water issues that have to be addressed,” McSherry added. “The situation with our drinking water has been saved for the time being, but we still have a very significant [and] serious water situation.
