Family of Alberta Hospital patient demanding answers

EDMONTON- Family members of a 22-year-old woman, who is a patient at Alberta Hospital, are demanding answers, after the woman was sent to hospital with several cuts and bruises.

Lisa Goltman’s family say Lisa was sent to the University of Alberta Hospital on Monday, after staff at Alberta Hospital found her lying in a pool of her own blood.

Lisa’s sister Michelle Goltman says she was told Lisa, who suffers from bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia, “had fallen and slipped on the urine in her room.”

However, Michelle is questioning whether or not that is true.

“I saw her and I saw the blood everywhere and bumps and bruises, I saw it from 50 feet away,” Michelle said. “When we got to the University Hospital the doctor looked at her and he said ‘what did they say? That this was a fall? This was not a fall.'”

Michelle says Lisa has said few details about her injuries.

“She said she got into a fight with a guy, that’s what she said. That’s all she said,” Michelle explained.

Michelle wanted to get to the bottom of what happened, so she called police.

Police tell Global News they have launched a preliminary investigation. However, Michelle says police have told her that interviews have revealed the incident took place in the common area, not in Lisa’s room. Michelle also says police told her interviews with staff raised questions.

“We met with the police for about an hour and a half, and that’s what they said to us, that there’s a lot of mixed statements, and we have to get the detective involved to re-interview these individuals,” Michelle added.

She says police also told her a forensics team will meet with Lisa Thursday night.

Alberta Health Services issued the following statement on the matter:

“Patients and patient safety are our focus. This incident is being investigated and reviewed internally. We have been discussing, and will continue to discuss, this matter directly with the patient’s family.”
