Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health says it is investigating a possible Tuberculosis exposure at Homewood Health Centre.

Officials said they recently learned someone who had been in Homewood was diagnosed with TB, but stressed there is no risk to the health centre or the community.

Public Health said the possible exposure happened between June 2017 and mid-July.

“So, now we begin an investigation to see if there was any danger of exposure to the staff, volunteers or patients,” said Chuck Ferguson, spokesperson for Public Health.

Ferguson said Public Health is encouraging Homewood’s 1,200 staff members to be tested. The facility on Delhi Street provides mental health and addiction supports.

“Depending on our investigation, we will be able to determine if any patients or past staff are at-risk,” he said.

Tuberculosis rates in Canada are considered low. In 2016, there were just over 1,700 cases in Canada.

Public Health investigates a handful of cases each year, Ferguson said.

Symptoms include a persistent cough for three weeks or more, fever, night sweats and weight loss.
