UPDATE: Highway 97 in B.C. reopens to single-lane traffic amid wildfire activity

Highway 97 between Peachland and Summerland was closed this afternoon, then reopened to alternating traffic due to a wildfire. At 8 p.m., the highway will be closed for the evening. Global News

UPDATE: 8:30 p.m. Thursday — Highway 97 between Summerland and Peachland has now been reopened to single-lane alternating traffic with an RCMP escort.

A traffic closure on the route was only expected if it were absolute necessary, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service.

Drivers can still take alternate routes such as Highway 97C, Highway 5A and Highway 3.

The highway between Summerland and Peachland has been closed because of a forest fire.

DriveBC says Highway 97 is closed in both directions because of a fire. Travellers are asked to take alternate routes via Highway 97C, Highway 5A and Highway 3.

 

DriveBC says an assessment in progress, and that how long the highway will be closed isn’t known. The next update will be at 4:30 p.m.
