Third Annual Canadian Immigrant Fair takes place Friday in Winnipeg

WATCH: The upcoming Canadian Immigrant Fair is a chance for immigrants, newcomers, students and temporary workers in Winnipeg to meet with employers and professionals. – Jul 18, 2018

Nearly 4,000 immigrants have arrived in Winnipeg this year so far and a major item they’ll hope to check off their to-do list is getting a job.

They’ll have the chance to do just that on Friday at the Canadian Immigrant Fair.

The fair aims to help skilled immigrants, newcomers, students and temporary workers find work and get their feet in employer’s doors.

CEO of Success Skills Centre, Monika Feist said the fair will have a variety of industries to explore.

“Anywhere from transportation, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries, to the RCMP.”

“Last year, we had about 30 different booths and we had over 1,000 people attend.”

Fiest said there will different booths available to help update resumes and gain interview skills.

“There’s special accent reduction clinics, headshot booth, there will be one-on-one consultations with employers.”

She said it’s important help immigrants get a head start career wise.

“We want them to know they can get back out there and utilize their skills and knowledge. There are many pathways to get their and they shouldn’t give up.”

Fiest said finding work can be mentally draining.

“After a few years, individuals can get depressed and it could even have an impact of the quality of family life.”

The fair takes place on Friday at the Radison Hotel on Portage Avenue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
