The newest member of the Saskatoon zoo needs a name.
Diego and Leah are the new parents of an infant female Goeldi monkey, who was born on May 27 and weighed roughly 109 grams at birth.
“It is always exciting to welcome a new addition to the Zoo,” Tim Sinclair-Smith, the zoo manager at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo, said in a release.

“Both baby and mother are doing well, and now it is time to select a name for the newest member of the troop.”
Zoo officials have narrowed the choice down to four names:
- Calli – short for Callimico, the species name;
- Maku – an indigenous South American language;
- Tupi – an indigenous South American language; and
- Sofia – a common Brazilian girl’s name meaning wisdom.
“We want our citizens to have a special connection with this monkey and watch her grow throughout the years,” Sinclair-Smith explained in why they are asking for the public to help choose her name.
Voting can be done online until Tuesday, July 31, with the winning name announced the following day.
Diego, Leah and their new baby can be viewed daily between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. local time at the monkey enclosure in the Kinsmen children’s zoo exhibit.
