Environment Canada is warning that severe thunderstorms are making their way towards the Greater Toronto Area.

The national weather service said its tracking a system capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain in northern parts of the region.

The agency issued a series of warnings and watches on Monday. As of 3:30 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for the City of Toronto, as well as Peel, Halton, York and Durham regions.

“The main threat with these thunderstorms is heavy rain with rainfall amounts up to 100 mm,” the agency said.

Environment Canada said the communities of Vaughan, Richmond Hill, North York, Maple, Concord and Thornhill are in the path of the storm.

The summer storm arrives ahead of a cold front which will bring relief from the hot and humid temperatures the past few days.

The weather agency warned that heavy rainfall can cause flooding and create hazardous road conditions,

Officials are advising the public to watch out for large hail that can damage property and cause injury.

Strong winds are also a concern as it can toss large objects, damage buildings and causes branches to break off trees.
