Child, 4, in care of CFS after drugs, gun found in Winnipeg hotel room

A four-year-old boy has been put in the care of Child and Family Services after police found the toddler in a Winnipeg hotel suite surrounded by drugs.

Police were sent to the Winnipeg hotel in the 200 block of Main Street after a someone concerned about the child alerted authorities.

Officers arrived around 10:30 p.m. on Canada Day and knocked on the suite door, which was opened by a young woman.

Police were able to see a table in the room with money, cell phones, scales and bags of white powder.

A man and the young child were also seated at the table.

Police discovered a sawed-off shotgun, ammunition and $3,400 cash in the suite along with more than $5,000 worth of drugs, believed to be cocaine.

“I cannot stress how concerning this is,” Const. Rob Carver said. “This child’s safety was at risk. These drugs are open”.

A 20-year-old woman and a man, 45, have been charged with numerous drug trafficking and firearms offences.

Both have been detained in custody.

Police were not able to release information on the relationship between the two adults or with the child.
