HOW TO GET THE BEST DEALS ON DOMAIN NAMES

Check out my video link on today’s Monday Morning News on Domain names and the upcoming iPad in stores this Friday: http://www.globaltvedmonton.com/video/mar+12++tech+untangled/video.html?v=2209169890&p=2&s=dd#video

Domain names cost money whether you use them for your
business or just personal use. I am talking about the plain vanilla domain name
with no additional services or options that can cost you more than $35 for one
year or if you do it right, less than $8!Check out

Here’s the trick that can save you a bundle of money, especially
if you have more than one domain name
.

-If you are registering a new domain name, shop around
starting with GoDaddy.com You don’t have much bargaining power the first time
around so choose wisely. If you think you are paying to much, start with a one
year plan. This will let you make the big money-saving move when renewal time
comes.

-If you had a domain name due for renewal, with your
existing registrar, shop around with well-known registrars like GoDaddy.com.
You will find the online quote from your current registrar can be more than $35
for the first new year, becoming cheaper with additional years. But did you
know that you have the right to transfer your domain name to another registrar
before it expires? Registrars typically make it difficult for you transfer to
another registrar, but it is what it is.  The transfer period can be three days or longer,
with a string of emails for you to reconsider not transferring, imposing a “waiting”
period siting privacy protection issues, or protecting you from the possibility
of someone posing as a registrar wanting you to release your name and then
selling it to someone else.

This is where you can really start shopping, like I did last
week, and have your current registrar match another registrar’s quote. This is
where you realize that like cellcos, you will get the best deals when your
intentions of leaving become evident. You actually get a real phone number to
call an agent who will make sweet deals with you to keep your business. But if
you politely insist on moving, they really can’t stop you.

One important thing:  make
sure you have full administrator or co-authority on your current domain name
registration, well before you start the migration process as it saves time
during the actual transfer. You get that, again, by simply asking the registrar
to give you that status. The migration process starts online with the new
registrar by choosing “domain transfers” and following through a few pages of
application. They in turn will inform your current registrar of your
intentions. Much like you do when you switch from one cell phone provider to
another.
