History
Kamloops — its name comes from the Shuswap term “Tk’emlups,” which means “meeting place.”
The Shuswap were first to inhabit the area, where they fished and hunted.
Today’s Tk’emlups te Secwepemc are descendants of these people.
European settlement began in 1811; at that time, fur trading, much of it involving beaver pelts, happened throughout the Okanagan Valley to the Thompson River.
That resulted in a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post being established.
Prospectors came subsequently, seeking gold.
Then came the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883, which brought Chinese workers to lay the track.
Amenities such as stores, hotels, schools, churches and a hospital sprung up and it was formally incorporated in 1893.
