EDMONTON- Due to a tremendous amount of public interest, the province has extended its condominium consultation survey by 30 days.
Service Alberta launched its online survey on February 13, as a way of getting public input on legislation regarding the development, purchase and operation of condominiums in Alberta. The survey was originally open until April 2, but has not been extended until May 2.
“The conversation has been very productive and worthwhile and that’s a dialogue we want to continue. We also want to remind people that all ideas will be considered, not just those highlighted in the survey,” explained Service Alberta Minister Manmeet S. Bhullar.

Since the consultation process began, Service Alberta has received nearly 3000 responses to the online survey and almost 75 percent have been from condominium owners.
The survey covers a wide range of topics, including consumer protection for buyers, insurance requirement, access to corporation records, dispute resolution, board governance, and regulatory standards for condominium managers.
Service Alberta is also reviewing the impact of a recent decision by the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench which determined that a bare land condominium corporation does not have authority, under the Condominium Property Act, to collect funds in advance from owners for repairing and maintaining portions of bare land units.
“We are exploring all options to address this issue to help give condominium owners and corporations more clarity and certainty in dealing with repairs and day-to-day maintenance issues,” said Bhullar.
The survey is available online until May 2 at letstalkcondos.servicealberta.ca.
Hard copies of the consultation can be requested by calling 1-877-427-4088 in Alberta.
