Millarville racetrack horse-riding arena roof collapses

The roof of the horse-riding arena at the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society in southern Alberta collapsed Monday.

“It appears about two-thirds collapsed. The sides are still standing but the majority of the building is gone” society president Brent Foster told Global News Tuesday.

The site around the arena has been secured, Foster said in a press release Monday.

“No indication anything was wrong. I’m surprised it did collapse. It appears to be a snow-driven event,” Foster said.

No people or animals were injured and the cause is under investigation, he added.

Foster said staff members are asking people to avoid the area around the arena.

“It is a blow. It’s one of the major buildings on our site. It’s definitely a community site,” he said.

Foster said that the facility had been going through a “growth phase” with upgrades to halls and mechanical equipment.

This incident sets them back, he said.

The hall, Quonset, office and other buildings are still open.

Millarville is about 30 kilometres southwest of Calgary.
