The government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed March 18 – 24 as Social Work Week, focusing this year on “Bringing Change to Life.”
“Every day, across our province, social workers support individuals, families and communities to seek and experience positive change,” Social Services Minister Paul Merriman said. “Social Work Week is our chance to take the time to appreciate what social workers do for the people of Saskatchewan, and also to recognize the value of social work as a profession.”
The Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers has grown from an active membership of 83 members to more than 1,800 registered members since its conception in October 1962. The member-based organization governs the profession of social work in the province.
“Social work is a diverse profession serving diverse populations, and looks to address both individual challenges and broader social issues such as poverty and inequality,” Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers president Ryan Labatt said. “This year’s theme, ‘Bringing Change to Life,’ reflects the work of social workers in promoting and supporting change, not only with individuals and families but also within communities and society.”
The government is encouraging people to get involved in the many activities planned in a number of communities throughout Saskatchewan and is providing details on them, including information on how to register for the events on the Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers’ website.
