Stan Martingale, manager of the Ramada Hotel and Conference Centre in Kelowna, said new employees continuously don’t show up for their first day of work.
“Reliability more than anything seems to be a challenge. People don’t seem to take jobs as seriously as they used to 20 years ago,” Martingale said. “We need to figure it out and adapt because it’s the new world.”
The Ramada was of the hospitality businesses that set up booths at the Okanagan’s larges tourism job fair Thursday in Kelowna.
More than 200 prospective employees attended the event.

Quails’ Gate Winery is looking to hire 93 seasonal employees in 2018 to add to their existing core staff, half of those just for their restaurant.
High hiring standards and a changing workforce have inspired the winery to re-think scheduling.
“I’ve been looking all week [for a job]. I’ve got quite a few interviews already so I’m excited,” Steven Wilson said..
“I don’t think it’s going to be difficult to get a job in the short-term for the summer months,” potential winery worker Marisa Dario said. “For the long-term winter months, that’s the challenge.”
Job fair organizers say that by 2020, there will be more than 12,000 new tourism jobs in the Thompson-Okanagan and about 101,000 across B.C.
