Alberta government strikes $85 million agreement with Metis

EDMONTON – The Alberta government has struck an $85-million agreement with its Metis settlements to help the communities become self-sustaining.

The 10-year deal will see money allocated to pay for infrastructure, education and other programs for the 4,800 people who live on the eight settlements.

The agreement was signed by Premier Alison Redford and Randy Hardy, president of the Metis Settlements General Council.

Redford calls the deal an investment in prosperous communities.

It is the latest in a series of funding agreements, but this is the first to focus on self-sustainability.

Alberta has the only recognized Metis land base in Canada, at 512,000 hectares.
