The demonstration took place at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

“You should feel safe when you go to school, not worry about waking up and getting shot,” said Grade 10 student Savannah Mcaskill.

Students stood outside for 17 minutes — a minute for each of the victims in last month’s deadly school shooting in Parkland, Fla.

“People need to understand, we’re not protesting anything, we’re just out here, standing in support for the dead and the survivors,” said student DJ Lowther.

The 19-year-old was charged with 17 counts of premeditated first-degree murder and 17 counts of attempted first-degree murder, all of which could lead to the death penalty if convicted.

Cruz’s public defender has said he will plead guilty if prosecutors take the death penalty off the table, which would mean a life prison sentence.
