The City of Calgary will begin inspecting all arenas next week following Tuesday’s roof collapse of the Fairview Arena.
Marco Civitarese, chief building official with the city, began emergency preparations to ensure the structural integrity of the properties even as the investigation into the cause of the collapse continues.
The building had been evacuated on Monday after a loud cracking noise during a novice hockey practice sent everyone scurrying out of the building.

According to the city, the inspection of more than 50 arenas will get underway on Monday. It’s hoped those inspections will be completed by Friday.
Notices will be given to the owners/operators of each facility.
As of Friday, investigators still hadn’t been able to get inside the Fairview Arena due to safety concerns.
Civitarese said the priority is to assess arenas that are of the same age and typology of the Fairview Arena.
He said any findings that may result in a building code change would be put to the province immediately to allow for any bylaw infraction or new law to be put in place.
The city said the previous system of inspecting these buildings every five years worked because of Canada’s building codes.
