The government says outreach workers and Mi’kmaq elders will meet with young inmates at the facility.

The program will be designed and led by the Mi’kmaq Legal Support Network and also involve the use of traditional practices, including sharing circles.

Paula Marshall, the network’s executive director, says engaging Aboriginal youth is important to tackling the root causes of crime.

A spokeswoman for the Justice Department says the program is being funded through a federal grant of just over $300,000.
