2 major weather radars in Saskatchewan out of operation

Environment Canada forecasters are relying on weather radar from outside of Saskatchewan to keep an eye on the sky. File / Global News

Environment Canada says it’s relying on weather radar from outside Saskatchewan while its two major radars in the province are out of operation.

Weather agency spokesman John Paul Cragg says the Bethune radar was damaged during a heavy wind last October, while the installation near Radisson is being replaced.

Cragg says two radar systems in Alberta, one in Manitoba and two in the United States are helping to cover the Saskatchewan.

He admits they don’t cover all of the province, but said satellite photos and surface observations are also used to put together accurate forecasts.

Environment Canada expects the Bethune station to come back on line late this month.

The new one near Radisson is undergoing testing and is expected to be up and running by March.
